Made for the 72 hour programming competition hosted at www.pixel-arts.org/72.  Seems like we beat Draco to the punch at having the first finished isometric game in PB.  It was a TON of fun to work on and the final product turned out nice.

Screen Shots:

Download:
www.spriteart.com/indigo/RetroRacers.zip

about the game:
we only had time to make 2 levels, but that should be plenty enough gameplay for you guys.  It's a bit hard to pick up, but once you do, it's a ton of fun to play.  Just remember that the game uses directional steering (pressing the left button makes the sprite go directly left) as opposed to angle steering, and you can press more than one arrow at a time to go at an angle.  The game was based around the concept of Galaxy5000 for the NES.  You can download the original from www.vimm.net.

who made it:
Noah Duncan: Programming
AKA: Bugboy
www.insectiledonut.com

Dan Fessler: Art, and Additional Programming
AKA: Indigo, Calypson
www.Indigo.SpriteArt.com

Martin Mayer: Music and SFX
www.multimediacomposer.co.uk

20 bonus points to be the first one to beat the game! Go!

have fun
-Dan

A great little game given the limited time frame. Smiley

The controls are awful though. Sorry.

thanks everyone for all the comments.  I've been getting alot of feedback and decided to update the game just a tad.

planned revisions...

Quote
SOUND:

fix motor sound problem:
-start off with higher pitch motor sound at 22000
-fix sound to co-ordinate with the speed of the craft, and not the buttons being pressed down
-loop low-rumble at all times (idle motor sound)?
-add more music (only if new graphic sets are created)

CODING:

fix all bugs:
-user lib not found
-crashes after lvl 1
-crashes after lose/win upon replaying
-not loading at all
-splash screen with different video mode options 400,300 or 800,600
-fix screen fade maybe

things to add:
-add options button in menu:
 -alpha/beta controls
 -video mode
-(using the esc key)pause menu including:
 -resume game
 -end race
 -restart race
 -exit to menu
-level selection screen
 -select level using unlockables method
-add a practice level with no racers and no laps
-shadow under cars using alpha transparency
-car selection screen

GRAPHICS:

things to fix:
-tile errors and lvl flaws
-car variences
-3..2..1...go needs re-working
-1st, 2nd, etc could be CG

things to add:
-more vegitation
-more graphic sets? (requiring more artists?)
-pause menu graphics
-mini iso tiles for lvl selection screen
-car selection screen gfx

beta controls will be the standard pressing left rotates the car to the left and forward is the gas.  that seems to be the number 1 gripe; the controls.

Nice game! Improving the controls would be great - the graphics are again very impressive

Okay then, when's the next version available? Hopefully not after Astrobreak final or Dig Dug final  Cheesy

Cheers,
Tommy

Hi!

Great work! Really fun.

But maybe the control could be better.

Greetings
