 Who Stole Waldo?

Game Title: Who Stole Waldo?
Programming  By:  Tommy Haaks
Artwork By: BlinkOK
Music BY: Matt McFarland

Created during the 2008 PlayBASIC game making competition.

Our hero's pet dog was stolen by some evil sinister professor
who wants to turn the little dog into one of his minions.
Our brave kid jumps into his favorite super hero suit and tries
to rescue his dog before the mad professor can transform his
lovely little pet.

It was real fun to code this game. Although the start was pretty
slow and due to BlinkOk's graphics all "standard" mechanisms of
PlayBasic (tile based map support, "normal" game loop without AFX images)
didn't work I really came to speed at the end of the competition
period! Although the game is not complete at all most of the basic
mechanisms are in now to add additional enemies, game objects
and nice gizmos to create a really great game.
I'm pretty happy with the game right now ;-)
But watch out for the final version!

About.
======

Twintrix is heavily inspired by the Atari ST classic Klatrix, which is
a mixture between Klax (Atari's attempt to steal the puzzle game crown
from Tetris) and Tetris itself.  It's also similar to countless other
 puzzle games like Columns.

This version of Twintrix was coded in http://playbasic.com
and requires DirectX 3.0 or above.

Gameplay.
==========

The principle behind Twintrix is simple, connect rows of identical
tiles to destroy them.  The minimum length of a row is 3 tiles and they
can be in any direction.  Several rows can be destroyed at once, and
when the remaining tiles fall down, new rows are often created causing
further destruction and giving more and more score.  The more tiles
you destroy per move, the more you score.

Tiles fall down the screen in groups of 3, these can be shuffled into
the required order then dropped onto the piles at the bottom of the
screen.  The next set of tiles is displayed; always a good idea to
plan your next move before the current tiles fall home.  The game
is over if any tiles reach the top of the screen.

Twintrix is for 2 players, but it's also independent multiplayer, so
the game is really split in 2 - one half for each player.  A head-to-head
game can be started by both players selecting head to head then one of
them selecting it - only when both players have the head to head option
highlighted can they start a head to head game.  In head to head mode -
the game is identical, except when you advance a level, you punish
the other player with a fresh row of tiles that push their existing
tiles up.  Once a players game is over, the game continues for the
other player so they can build on their score, but they can also start
a single player game for themselves.

Players can use the keyboard or joypad.  player one uses WASD, player
2 uses the cursor keys.  Up and down select a menu option, and Right will
select it, Left will go back to the menu screen when viewing the high
score table.  During the game, the controls are fairly self explanitory,
down to drop the tile faster, left and right to move the current tile
set, and up will shuffle the tiles:

Tracys Prototype game

Today we take a look back at Tracys Prototype game from way back in 2004..

This is one of the oldest game demo's and it turns out to be one of the most interesting with all kinds cool effects in it for a PlayBASIC made way back in 2004. Excellent work Tracy ! All the artwork in the demo is a weird composite of PlayBASIC forum art and other unknown sprites which all form a kind of Frankenstein mash up representation of the potential actions that character was to have. Shame there's not even some mock up game artwork, which would have been cool.. Oh well... It's still a pretty cool demo and well worth a look for those PlayBASIC coders out there..

Never Dawn was the winner of the PlayBASIC Heroes Quest 2D game making competition back in 2008.

Original Game Concept & Programming: Green.7 (Mike Bigler) Artwork: Green.7 (Mike Bigler) Music By: Tax-5 Video Capture & Editing: Kevin Picone Released: 30th,Sep,2008 Looking back Never Dawn is a great little game and it's very obvious to me while playing it why it won! It's just not only very polished but it's just some good old fashion platforming fun. Was really getting into capturing this one, this might be actually be my favorite PlayBASIC game, it's certainly in the top 10 at least..

Here's a little look back at Ian's Shadow of the beast demo from way back 2006.....

Shadow Of The Beast (Mock Up)
PlayBASIC Programming :Ian Price

#Shadow Of The #Beast was one of those games back in the late 80's that sold Amiga's by the truck load, people of certain age no doubt remember seeing the demo running in their local computer store, for many, it was one of those jaw dropping moments, something that really set the early 16/32 bit generation apart from the 8bit generation.

This is not a remake of the game, it's more a remake of the famous #parallax #scrolling using PlayBASIC programming language on #Windows instead of good old assembly back in the #Amiga days...

Anyway, thanks for watching and if you want to learn more about PlayBASIC you can find us at the links bellow..

 JetPAK

Programming Ian Price

Released: 23rd,Aug, 2006

Quote

This game, whilst heavily influenced by the original, differs in several key areas. Firstly, the game is no longer a static single screen game - it now scrolls horizontally, making the game playing area almost 3 screens wide. This hopefully enhances the gameplay experience meaning that you have to move even more than originally, so that the game remains a testament to your skill and control and more typical with contempory shoot'em-ups. A scanner has now been added to assist you in locating the ship parts, bonus items and fuel cells (and those pesky aliens). Graphics have also been enhanced/updated and sound effects/music are no longer just beeps. The game also has many more aliens on screen at any one time and there are many more varieties, each with their own attack/movement patterns, weaknesses - including enemies that are indestructable, or require multiple hits.
