Title: Rat tat tat.. More Drumming :)
Post by: kevin on July 22, 2012, 09:51:01 AM
Here's a couple of short videos taken with my sisters lumix camera.   Really impressed with the camera in low light. Records 1280 by 720 in some form of loss less codec (MOV). Can't play them on my PC for whatever reason, so have to convert them to Lagarith (http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html) format (another loss less format) to view and edit together. Could prolly have got away with converting the MOV straight to XVID, but the video editor I use  seems a bit crash happy with key frame based formats. In the mood to do some more, but don't have the charger for the camera..  but, ya get that!

This is drum solo based around a 6-6-4 16th note grouping.   The sequence is made up of two  paradiddle diddles with 1/2 a paradiddle to make up a bar of 4/4.  So we have RLRRLL RLRRLL RLRR and the opposite LRLLRR LRLLRR LRLL.     I like playing a 3 feel on the kick drum against the hands to give it more texture.

Drum Solo Recording Test With Panasonic Lumix DMC FT30 Camera

Drum Solo Recording Test With Panasonic Lumix DMC FT30 Camera The video is shot with cameras default settings, the video is 720P 24fps and audio seems to be variable coming in around 128kbps. The room is very dark and I just want ed to some idea of how it was going to work, might have to tweak the settings / positioning / lighting to get a result, but it's already better than my old video camera..

Drumming Practice - Searching for that tom Lick Episode #02  (2021-03-19)

Howdy drummers,  In today's Drum Practice / Solo / Jam  I'm looking to recapture a tom pattern from the other day..   I guess I'll never know it again, but we're getting closer to something I like.

This clip was recorded on my android phone 🙁  so there's some distortion on the drums but mainly the hi hats & crashes.  I wasn't planning on publishing it, but liked some of the segments, so put it up on my much neglected you tube channel..

Thanks for the watching..

Drum Solo - 8th Note Triplet Melodies Part 1  - Kevs Drum Shed  - 25th March 2022

Drum Solo - 8th Note Triplet Melodies Part 1  -Kevs Drum Shed  - 25th March 2022

I love nothing more than sitting at the drum  kit exploring what simple melodies you make with just a basic five piece kit.  This one is based around a 8th note triplets in a bar of 4/4.

The basic pattern here in TAB would boil down to this.

Key:  R=Right Hand  L =LEFT Hand and F= Bass Drum Foot

( 3 ) ( 3 ) ( 3 ) ( 3 )
RFR LRL RFR L

    Song: 8th Note Triplet Melody
   Artist: KevsDrumShed
   Timing: 4/4
    Tempo: 90
     Date: 26/03/2022

Count:| 1tl+tl2tl+tl3tl+tl4    |
 Tom1:| ------o--------------- |
 Tom2:| ----------o-------o--- |
  SnD:| ----o---o------------- |
 FlT1:| o-----------o---o----- |
  BD1:| --o-----------o------- |

Note: the left foot is playing the quarter note pulse along with it.   The rate changes you hear are break the triplets down into triplets.  So playing a triplet between each quarter note triplet.  The sticking I'm generally using is most likely a size stroke roll.    RLLRRL

I hope this helps give you some ideas to take out into your drum shed.   So get out there and get chopping wood ...

Cheers,
KevsDrumShed

Remastering the Messing Around Drum Solos...

This footage was actually shot ten years ago today (9th June 2012),  the original upload is low resolution / low frame rate and way too dark.    So the remaster is 1080p & 30fps - reverb audio with tweaked the visuals.

The original copies of these videos are stored on my PLayBASIC channel on youtube.  once these go live I can delete the old files..   I'm trying to clean this mess up !

This was recorded on a hybrid TAMA Drum set (Artstar -RockStar) (https://amzn.to/3zwd1to).  The kit was 20 plus year old at the time of this drum recording,  with  old heads, no tuning.. just sat down and playing whatever came out that day.

Drum Solo 1 -  Messing Around -  Snares Off   - Remaster

Here's the first of three short drum solos taken to test my sisters lumix camera (https://amzn.to/3x79xuA) (720p), which seems to do a pretty good job; considering  how dark my drum room is without any extra lighting.  As for the drumming, it's just whatever was on my mind at that moment.   Anyway, thanks for the watching.

Drum Solo 2  - Always Messing Around - Snares On - Remaster

This footage was actually shot ten years ago today (9th June 2012),  the original upload is low resolution / low frame rate and way too dark.    So the remaster is 1080p & 30fps - reverb audio with tweaked the visuals.

This is the second of two short drum solos taken test my sisters lumix camera (https://amzn.to/3x79xuA), which seems to do a pretty good job considering  how dark my drum room is without extra lighting.   As for the drumming, probably the most interesting part is the double stroke section at around the 35 second mark, that drops in from the triplet (with kick shuffle) section, although kick drum doesn't really cut through in the recording.      Anyway, thanks for the watching.

Drum Solo 3 - A Trip To The Let - Remaster

This is the third drum solo snippet taken while testing my sisters lumix camera (https://amzn.to/3x79xuA).  The camera does a pretty job considering how dark the drum room with live audio.  The drumming in this section is1/8 note triplet based mainly.  The first section has simple  hand over foot independence, moving into more of an obvious shuffle feel half way through.

Note:   These are schedules for a 9th of June 2022 release..  So TEN YEARS TO THE DAY

KevsDrumShed  - Examples Of David On Facebook - 2022 06 26

This is a little helper video for a fellow drummer on facebook drumming group.   He was asking for opinions so I thought i'd throw a little video together for him.. and others.

The video was quickly recorded on my android phone to demo some simple beat ideas.   The initial part of the video shows the raw phone audio; then from 30 seconds onwards reverb is added it post.   Which helps..  but still isn't wonderful.

and  yeah.. i'm out of practice :(

Drum Groove - RRR- based Funky Groove - Kevs Drum Shed

Found this section during a drum practice session.   It's a groove based around a driving hi hat pattern of RRR-RRR-RRR-RRR-   with accents on the Ah counts mostly on the snare and kick drum.  The recording is from a few years ago but upon a second listen I found myself grooving along..

Drum Solo - It Puts the Lotion On - Tom Groove   - KevsDrumShed  ( 2022-09-16 )

This short section from came about while singing 'It puts the lotion on'  which i believe is a line from "Silence of the Lambs",   which is odd as I've not seen that movie for decades.  None the less for some reason that little melody came to mind during this drum solo.

Drum Practice -  Single Strokes Around The Kit - Warming up  -Messing - KevsDrumShed

This is a collection of single stroke  clock wise patterns around the drums that I've been using a  an impromptu warm up for decades..  My drum chops aren't what they once were as you can tell with all the stick clicks but it's some progress..   but it's a long long way back..  :(

5-5-5 and 1  (RLRFF) - Drum Lesson

Hey Drummers welcome to my latest drum lesson.  This one is creating fills out of a three groups of a five and one group of one as the final pick up note.  The Fill is played 16th notes which takes an entire bar of 4/4 time (5+5+5+1=16) .

The base pattern i'm using is

  RLRFF

This is repeated three times making

  RLRFF RLRFF RLRFF

Adding the final note we get

  RLRFF RLRFF RLRFF R

 Drum Key:  R= RIght Head / L = Left Hand / F = Foot

  NOTE: {experimenting with scheduling.. so this shouldn't be visible till 1pm Sunday..}

Drum Solo -  Stacked (Double) Crash  Take 2

Hey drummers..  While experimenting with stacking a second crash on top of my paiste sound formula I ran into this little pattern I liked..

The hand pattern is based around RRRL  the RRR's are broken between the crash and ride/ then floor tom to the ride cymbal.

Wtf is this  Drum Groove - Split Hihat / Ride groove

Came across this little odd drum groove during my drum practice.   It's based on 16th note with sextuplets fill inns split between the ride and hi hat cymbals.    Which give it an uneven flow about it..  Kind of weird but fun to play on he drum kit..

Bump Tee Dump  - Drum Groove - Searching for just the right pattern

This is me jamming around on a drum pattern I call the Bump Tee Dump.

  "Bump Tee Dump" drum pattern.

This is a sort of 1/2 time groove with tom accents that appeals to me a lot.     The accents are 1 2  + 4 + in the first bar.  So it's a sort of the frame work i'm singing in my head, even though i'm rarely playing this exact sequence as this accompanying video will atest.   :)

In The Wild -  Drum Solo - KevsDrumShed

Hi Drummers this clip came about while capture some photos of my old 1991 era Tama kit  for the last time.  I haven't played on the full drum set now for over 15 years and if you've watched any of my drum videos in the past you would have seen a few simple configurations over the years but I generally revert back to a five peace with 8 inch and 10 inch rack toms, 22 inch kick  and 16inch floor tom.

This drum solo is something of a walk down my drumming nostalgia for me, initially messing around with some patterns of the past (intro pattern) into some every day stuff I'll revert back to at the drop of a hat.

The full kit is an eight piece Tama kit.   Tom sizes are 8 ,10, 12, 13 and 16 inch floor tom.  Two 22 inch bass drums and a 14 inch by 5 and a quarter inch snare drum.

Crash cymbals are Paiste sound formula (16 left / 18 right) - Paiste 22 inch 2002 ride (with a huge crack in it :( )

Recorded on Android Moto7 phone with no effects added. life Camera audio .

KevsDrumShed - In The Wild - All Drum Solos - Noodling - (2022-11-30)

Hi Drummers these clips came about while capture some photos of my old 1991 era Tama kit  for the last time.  I haven't played on the full drum set now for over 15 years and if you've watched any of my drum videos in the past you would have seen a few configurations over the years but I generally revert back to a five peace with 8 inch and 10 inch rack toms, 22 inch kick  and 16inch floor tom.

While I guess you could call these drum solos, I'm really just noodling through my  drumming nostalgia.  Starting off (and reverting back to) a gallop independence groove on the ride, then into some laid back swing /shuffles some tom rolls mixed with some more independence and so on.

Drum Kit:  TAMA 8 piece (Rock and Artstar combo).    Tom sizes are 8 ,10, 12, 13 and 16 inch floor tom.  Two 22 inch bass rums and a 14 inch by 5 and a quarter inch snare drum.

Crash cymbals are paiste Sound Formula (16 left / 18 right) - Paiste 22 inch 2002 ride (with a huge crack in it :( )

Drum Grooves - Gallop against 3 feel over 8th note triplets - KevsDrumShed

In this video, I demonstrate how to use limb independence to create complex rhythmic textures by layering a gallop pattern played on my right hand with a 3 feel on my foot against the triplets on my left hand. By playing a sixteenth note three feel and coordinating it with eight note triplets on my left hand, I explore various ideas for creating intricate and dynamic grooves. Through this technique, I showcase how limb independence can be utilized to expand your rhythmic vocabulary and enhance your musical expression.

Exploring Quintuplet Possibilities on the Drums  - Drum Solo - KevsDrumShed

This is odd little drum solo containing a mixture of my current drum grooves and stickings,  focusing a lot on quintuplets this solo,  with a 3 feel on the bass drum underneath to make a even  more confusing to lock onto where the pulse is.

   I am just jamming remember !  ..

Drum Groove - Three two clave on hi hat with 16th note triplets on hands

This is combination drum pattern, with sextuplets on the hands over  a Three two clave pattern on the left foot, with the right foot catching the one and three counts on the bass drum.     It's played at slow tempo here around 60-65 bpm

Layered Gallop  Drum Groove - KevsDrumShed - 2023-06-01

This drum groove is in 4/4 time - The hands cycle through playing a gallop on the right hand R-RRR-RRR-RRR-RR on the ride of floor tom (pad in my case),  the left foot is playing a hi hat close on each quarter note.   The bass drum is initially playing just one and three, then moves to playing 1e+ 2e+ 3e+ 4e+  under the gallop,  finally filling e and and the and ah on the left hand.

I've included a quick drum notation of the idea on screen.   Simple on the surface, but It's an independence challenge underneath.    Give it a try and tells how you went bellow..   Easy or too hard ?
