A couple of odd jobs have landing in my lap, one requires video editing/conversion/joining. I've got some video editing software already, but not too fond of it. I'd prefer something light, simple and fast.. Ideas ?

The other is simply finding something that can help organize my backups. Looking through the duron system and there's a truck load of old stuff sitting on it, spread across the various partitions, dumped everywhere. I'm talking stuff ranging back some 15 or more years. What i'd like to find is something that can help create indexed cd/dvd's of the materials. I've been meaning to write one for ages but, never got around to it. Ideas ?

Edit:  Video conversion tools (Mov to Mp4, AVI )

I only need VirtualDub to remove commercials from my downloaded tv recordings (http://free.save.tv). It can do some stuff but I don't know if it is of much help to you. What it does offer is direct stream copy (Menu bar->Video->Direct stream copy) which allows to remove stuff from AVI files without converting everything again. So that's very fast!

For your backup stuff: Would a tool like TreeDir be of any help? Or do you also want to backup the stuff?
I use Cobian Backup where you can add any number of directories and files to your backup selection and get it all neatly zipped up in one or several zip archives (compression and encryption is supported).

Thanks for those..   I've got VirtualDub and have sniffing around and various other tidbits.  A lot of the chunks aren't in the same formats, so it's not too surprising nothings too happy about joining them.  So a re-compress is looking about it.

as for compilation stuff, they're for backup purposes.   Source, Music, Video, Photos the works..   I prefer not to compress this stuff. So I can grab a file when I need it.  really just need something to index the disc(s).  And search interface would be handy.  Which is what I originally had in mind.

Have you thought about using Google Desktop? You can keep your stuff where it is and just search for it. You can even install plugins which allow to index all your favorite file types (like .pba files)...
