Been running Windows Vista for a couple of years now.
It's been unstable for a few months(not wanting to shut down 70% of the time).

I'm currently running PlayBasic BetaV164k16. No problems with this beta and the unstable Vista.

I put a new 500gb hard drive into the laptop and reinstalled Windows Vista.

It took 14 hours last Tuesday to install Vista and get the Vista updates installed up to
Service Pack 2. This does not include reinstalling regular software.

Thats a lot of wasted time used up for one person.
How many hours of ALL the people on Earth who uses any of the Windows operating system(any version)
is wasted waiting. I would not be surprised if all of the waiting around the world for Windows to do its jobs would add up to several human lifespans a year.

???  Windows 7 ... a joy to upgrade to ???
More than likely another future pain to endure.
Just my opinion.

Yeah,  setting up a machine again can be a huge pain in the backside..  I'm sort of looking forward to jumping to Win7 sometime within the next few months,  but i'm really not looking forward to tracking down all the tonka toys i've installed on the Xp box..

Big C.

I didn't use vista... I ve bought Win Seven Prof. and I suprised how fast it is to install it. The only problem I had last weekend was to install open office after installing many other programs and win updates... The half day of saturday was wasting time because openoffice installation was braking many times. I didn't know why. So I had format c: and make a clean installation. Open Office was the first program I had installed after Win Seven was ready to use. And surprise surprise... Know I have a running open Office ;)

Well, those little updates after service pack 2 has started some shutdown problems this weekend again.
I'm going to try the 7 restore points I created during all those Vista updates.
The one I created after SP2 seemed stable last week.

I have not checked yet to see if my laptop is up to requirements for Windows 7.
It's a HP laptop.
Work eats up a lot of time this year and has slowed me down on updating anything on my website
and the current game i'm almost finished with(January?)(95% finished).
I'm not going to try and keep the game SMALL.
Whatever size it becomes whenever finished is what it will be when released.
No more concerns about game downloads being too large and taking a lot of time to download anymore.

My  laptop came with vista.it lasted 2 days and i downgraded?? to XP.
a couple of years later i tried the RC of Win7 and i am really impressed.i have been burned before with micro$oft products,so i am always wary, but i have to admit win7 is pretty bloody good.Don't bother upgrading just go for a fresh install.much safer

Work calls in 2 hours from now. Not much free time for anything this year.
I need to check with HP about upgades and also see if the laptop is up to it.
I'll exit here now and spend a little time to find out.

Make a virtual machine from your existing XP with this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx, then install a Windows 7 and run this virtual machine on it. I've done that, and everything's perfect!

Windows 7 works perfectly fine for me. The only problem I guess I may have trouble with is that Windows 7 does take up more ram than WinXP sp3, so I'd imagine I'll have to improve my RAM a bit in order to get it to run some applications which require a lot of rendering faster.
This signature is boring, and could be improved. However, the user of this signature doesn't need a fancy signature because he or she doesn't really care for one.

Since the Seagate 500gb hard drive also acted
very unstable on my HP laptop receiving the
Win Vista Home Premium install last week I
decided I had nothing to loose by buying a new
64gb Kingston Solid State Drive
to use as drive C:
It took ONLY 6 1/2 hours to get it back to
service pack 2.
Thats about HALF the time it took for the
Seagate 500gb drive to install windows last week.

And it also starts from power up to the windows
screen a lot faster than the 5400rpm hard drive.

Shut down also shuts down windows now. I was
expecting windows to not want to shutdown again.
But it has not happed yet.

I rearranged my files(about 900gb) because of
drive C: being only 64gb in size.
I moved them around from one drive to another
and Vista was able to handle it this time.

So the solid state drive turns out to be worth
the purchace.
It also makes the laptop a lot more easy to use now.
Of course I have to keep most things on other
hard drives or on flash(drive)sticks, but I have
never kept much files on drive C: anyways.

The 64gb Kingston Solid State Drive( - SSD Now series)
does a great job.
Newer versions of solid state drives would
probobly do even better than this one I bought.

I feel that this Vista inside my computer is
healthy again. I'll find out within a month
if it gets sick again.

Also...
In searching for information I read on the HP website
that some hard drives may not work well or at all with this laptop.
Seagate drives were on this list.
I read this after I had already bought the 500gb drive.

At Fry's electronics(in Texas) the 64gb Kingston
Solid State Drive( - SSD Now series) is now
for sale(until Dec 10th) for $32.00 less with a $30.00 rebate.
I went and got this reduced price and the rebate today.
So in the end I bought it for about $99.00
I consider it a bargin.
This discount tells me that...
it will be out of date(discontinued) soon and
other,larger,faster drives are coming.

Anyone else using a Solid State Drive for their
Drive C: for windows?

Last month I gave the laptop to my sister and got a
Shuttle SA76G2 desktop computer
installed Windows 7 Home premium  64bit
4gb(8gb max) memory
AMD Phenom X4 945 processor  3Ghz speed

So far... It runs better than windows vista ever will.
All problems I had with win vista left with the laptop.
Starts and shuts down faster than win vista ever did.
Only found 1 thing that did not work. That is a
USB MAXTOR 120gb hard drive.  Win7 will not detect it.
It must be a too old for Win7. Everything else works fine.

I rate Win7    as #1
         XP       as #2
         VISTA  as #3

Another bonus is I can see the screen(19inch) again instead of a small 14.1 inch laptop screen.
