 FREE DRUM LESSON - 3/16  5/16  & 7/16 Cycles

  The following are some examples of 3, 5  & 7 (16th) note groupings layer upon common time.   The groupings have some rests to make them a bit more interesting,  but really it's pretty straight forward.

  The 3 feel is based on the RRL sticking, except we're removing the L strokes.   So we get RR-RR-

  The 5 feel is based on  RLRRL sticking.  When we remove the Left we get R-RR-

  The 7 feel is based on  RLRLRRL sticking.  When we remove the L we get R-R-RR-

  To get a sense of the patterns,  separate your hands onto two distantly different surfaces.    Then play the pattern split (with both hands) ,  after a little while you should start to hear the right hard part.    If you can, try remove the left hand.

   Once you've sense of the pattern, then try and get the kick/snare parts in.

 FREE DRUM LESSON - 5/16th grooves

   The following grooves are created from the groupings of five 16th notes spread over a bar of 4/4 time.  Since the main building blocks are groups of 5, and a bar of 4/4 contains sixteen 16th notes in a bar, then our groups aren't going to fit perfectly.   So there's the last repeat we'll be adding some make up strokes.

 This groove is created from the following 5,5,6 groupings split between the hi hat and snare.

 5=  RLRRL
 6=  RLRRLL

  Drum Lesson - Improving hand to hand strength and coordination

    For a drummer, learning to play off either hand is well worth the effort.  A simple exercise is to play 1/16th notes (slowly) in various permutations.  Starting with the right and left hand.  Which can be lot harder than it sounds, in particular if it's something you've never really done before.

   So the idea we have some fixed music (like bellow), where the only thing we're altering is the sticking.  Once comfortable, we can start moving it around the kit.

Drum Lesson - Playing in 5

  The following exercises are written in 10/8 even though I generally play them as quintuplets inn  4/4.    The core idea is behind this is to try and make 5 sound even.  So the primary accents on the bass drum and snare are falling on where the quarter notes would be in 4/4.    Gives an interesting effect moving between a regular 1/8 note driven bar of common time then moving into a quintuplet feel.

   Drum Lesson - 8th note Tom Ping Pong melody for new drummers

  This short drum pattern is for the long boring sunday afteroons.   The lesson looks at the idea of playing a simple melody with the lead hand (in my case the right hand) between the floor tom, rack tom , snare and back to the rack tom.  So the pattern is ping ponging back and forward between.

 Initially we start with the basis 8th note versions, then move onto adding 1/16th notes on the left hand then sextuplets.

The sextuplet sticking is (right handed)
